William Green wrote the book “Richer, Wiser, Happier”. When I read this book for the first time, it shaped my career as an investor like nothing else. I was amazed when I discovered the principles that ruled the operating framework of the great investors.
These are virtues (mentioned above) that I try to emulate, and it’s such timeless values in particular, found at the intersection of investing and a good life I will zero in on in my posts.
"When you first study a field, it seems like you have to memorize a zillion things. You don't. What you need is to identify the 3-12 core principles that govern the field. The million things you thought you had to memorize are various combinations of the core principles." - John Reed
In my take on investing, there exist only a select few, yet deeply significant subjects worthy of most of our attention. But they embody exceptional complexity and nuance. I’ll do my best to pave the way towards these core principles, from a bunch of different angles - making them more and more accessible to the reader.
Another source of tremendous inspiration has been letters to shareholders from investors and business owners, i.e. Warren Buffet, Howard Marks, Jeff Bezos, Nick Sleep, etc. Sharing knowledge in this manner is a beautiful and generous thing, but it also grants the writer the privilege of accessing a platform dedicated to personal learning. I’m intrigued by this approach, and I hope to create my own launchpad that brings value to others - and learning to myself.
I’ll conclude with a final quote from a figure I greatly admire, Charlie Munger, whom I’m also eager to introduce as he’ll most likely be the most frequently cited individual in my newsletter. When he was asked about the trick to his and his partner Warren Buffet’s remarkable success, he replied:
"We don't have any new tricks. We just know the old tricks better."
So friends, let’s get to know the old tricks and know them well!
(Highly recommend the next read to be Warning Alert)
